Breast Augmentation
Should I have Breast Implants?
Women choose breast implants for many reasons — whether it is to achieve a fuller breast size, feel more confident in clothes, or address natural asymmetry. For some, it is about restoring shape after pregnancy and breastfeeding, while others consider implants as part of reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy. Whatever your reason, your goals are personal and completely valid.
This is not just a cosmetic decision — it is about how you feel in your body. Taking time to explore your motivations, ask questions, and speak with a trusted surgeon can help you make a choice that aligns with your confidence, comfort, and future self.

Considering Breast Implants? Here is What You Should Know.
Choosing to undergo breast implant surgery is a deeply personal decision. Before moving forward, it is important to take time to reflect on your individual goals — whether they are related to appearance, confidence, body proportions, or post-reconstruction needs. Your lifestyle and comfort should also be considered. For example, your activity level, long-term maintenance preferences, and expectations for recovery all play an important role in selecting the right implant for you.
There are several types of implants, sizes, shapes, and materials available — each offering different benefits. Likewise, the surgical approach and recovery timeline may vary depending on your body and chosen procedure. Understanding your options will help ensure your results not only look natural but also feel right for you.
The most important part of the process is finding a qualified, experienced, and compassionate surgeon who understands your goals and can walk you through the journey step by step. From the first consultation to the final result, your surgeon will help you make informed choices that align with your body, health, and vision for the future.
This is your body, your choice — and you deserve to feel empowered and supported every step of the way.
Post Surgery: What should I know?
Day 1–3: Immediate Recovery
During the first few days after surgery, it is normal to experience soreness, tightness in the chest, fatigue, and limited movement. Your chest may feel swollen or firm. Most patients are encouraged to rest as much as possible, stay hydrated, and avoid any form of strenuous activity. Following your surgeon’s instructions closely and taking any prescribed medications will help ease discomfort during this early stage.
Week 1: Aftercare & Support Garments
Wear a post-surgical bra (designed with TriFlex compression fabric to assist in your recovery). This post surgical recovery bra is easy to put on, soft on the skin and comfortable for extended wear.
Week 2–4: Healing & Settling
As you move into weeks two to four, you may notice the swelling and bruising begin to fade. Your breasts might still look uneven or sit higher on the chest — this is part of the natural “drop and fluff” process, where implants gradually settle into a more natural position. During this time, gentle movement such as light walking is usually encouraged, but it is still important to avoid lifting or intense activity unless your surgeon gives you the go-ahead.
Week 4–6+: Gradual Return to Normal
From week four onward, most women start to feel more like themselves. The implants continue to settle, discomfort greatly reduces, and energy levels usually improve. You may begin returning to your usual routines, including work and light exercise, depending on how your body is healing. Always check with your surgeon before resuming physical activities like workouts, and continue monitoring your progress for any changes that might need attention.
Breast Implant Placement (Overs and Unders)
Whether to place the breast implant used for breast augmentation above or below the muscle is one of the few questions that seem to cause more misunderstanding or debate among patients and plastic surgeons. The first issue is that there is not a single best answer. The physical attributes of each individual may cause a woman or her plastic surgeon to make a completely different decision than another. The apparent misunderstanding of the medical terms related to this problem is another issue. In order to understand your plastic surgeon’s recommendation when you speak with them, this section will help you understand the various options for breast implant placement.
The following will give you a general overview, but please click on each link for more detail about each breast implant placement option.
- Sub-glandular Breast Implant Placement (also known as “Overs”): The breast implants are positioned above the muscle but beneath the breast gland. ‘Over’ refers to the fact that the breast implant is positioned above the muscle.
- Partial Sub-muscular Placement (Also Known as Dual Plan Placement): Although there are other names for this arrangement, the implant is essentially positioned partially beneath the muscle. Some names for this include partial submuscular, partial subpectoral, and, albeit inaccurately, submuscular and subpectoral. This placement is sometimes also referred to as “unders,” but the phrase should actually refer to full submuscular placement.
- Complete Sub-muscular Breast Implant Placement (also known as “Unders”): In this case, the breast implant is positioned entirely beneath the muscle. The proper terms for this are submuscular or subpectoral.
- Sub-facial Breast Implant Placement: The muscles of the chest are covered by a thin layer of tissue known as fascia. Some surgeons will position the breast implant beneath the fascia after separating it from the muscle. Few plastic surgeons offer sub-fascial placement.
- Advantages and Disadvantages: For a summary of the benefits and drawbacks of each breast implant placement, visit this section; however, make sure to read the links on each one above first!
